Lectures, jobs, friends, hobbies and Co. – only seemingly no time to do the writing assignments for the university? Many students wait until the deadline knocks on the door. They gather up and work overnight until it’s done. Quality questionable – main thing done. If you feel like you, but you want to change your writing habits, you can set out on a path that can save you from unplanned night and weekend shifts. You decide what your path, your writing schedule should look like and which steps you take. But you should keep in mind your writing habits and strategies so you can work on them – the more ruthless, the better.
The goal is to write regularly so that writing becomes a routine and progresses steadily, albeit in small steps. Your lyrics will gain in quality, your satisfaction will increase and deadlines will no longer be a threat.
There are ten steps you should think about to design and maintain your writing schedule.
Step 1: Motivation and Social Pressure
Be aware of why you want to give yourself a schedule for writing. What spurs you on? Once you know what motivates you to write regularly, you should commit yourself to following your writing schedule. Also tell friends that they can keep reminding you of your commitment.
Step 2: Planning your time
If you’re motivated, it’s time for planning: Reserve time windows where you can work on your texts undisturbed. To do this, you fill in a weekly schedule with all the obligations to see when you can take time to write. Whether you reserve a time window of three hours a week or half an hour daily, you decide. It is important that your writing sessions take place regularly from week to week and you plan realistically so that you can build a writing routine.
Step 3: Create an overview
Then you can make a list of your writing projects: housework, essay, lab report, research articles, BA / MA work – what’s up. On the list, you can tell when the deadline is, how much time you want to reserve for each text (for example, number of writing sessions), and what priorities your writing assignments currently have. The list will change constantly, but give you a good overview. Hang up the list somewhere where you see it again and again.
Step 4: Set exact goals
Once a writing session is due, you have to decide which writing job you are working on. Instead of saying that you are writing the BA thesis, you should formulate a small, achievable goal for each session. So not write to BA thesis , but 300 words in chap. 4.3 , brainstorming for the introduction or 5 pages in chap. 6 revise . You quickly realize how much you can do. At the latest the night before, you should know what you want to edit in the next writing session. You can also schedule several sessions in advance.
Step 5: Self-control
If you have meeting goals, you should also check that you reach them. Keep a chart or graph that will tell you about the subtask, the goal (for example, the number of words), and the goal achievement. Record your progress, whether you have achieved a goal or not. If you cheat, you do not do yourself a favor. Because with the progress control you keep the overview, even if you work on five writing tasks in parallel. Looking back, you can reconstruct if your writing schedule was realistic or you need to change something.
Step 6: Select work location
To help you make the most of your writing schedule, you should think about where you work. Design your work so that you can work concentrated. Newspapers, your mobile phone or the Internet often prove to be sources of interference. Also tell your fellow human beings when you want to write undisturbed.
Step 7: Minimize distractions
During the actual writing session, you will always be afflicted by disorders. Most of the time, you’ll distract yourself from working by chasing daydreams, dealing with other things, or somehow losing focus. Do not worry, that’s normal. Watch how it comes to the distractions. Once you perceive them, you concentrate on the task again and again.
Step 8: Rituals and Reward
Rituals before and rewards after the session can also put you in a mood of writing. Figure out which activities will prepare you for writing and how you can then reward yourself for the work done. For larger milestones, you can treat yourself to something special, as long as it does not deter you from the next writing session.
Step 9: Develop routine
If you notice objections that make you believe that you can not write – no time, the muse has not come, the wrong workplace, strange light, etc. – then take note and write anyway. Just imagine writing is part of your job. Whether you like it or not, you sit down at the scheduled time and work. Writing becomes a routine that you do not have to worry about anymore.
Step 10: Joy
You have planned, listed, written, controlled and successfully defended all the little demons like distractions and objections. But do not forget to look forward to the new habit and your steady progress in writing.
